By this point in the Story, humanity has repeatedly chosen independence over trust. Although we readily admit that we are sinners, we often fail to grasp just how deeply sin has broken us or the weight of the debt we owe a holy God. If we were reading the Story for the first time, we might expect God to walk away from His rebellious creation. After all, as the One who had been rejected and offended, He had every right to demand payment for our debt. But the cost of that debt was far greater than we could ever repay—it would mean our eternal separation from Him.
Instead of giving us what we deserved, God responded with astonishing grace. From the very beginning, He had a plan to restore what had been broken. He chose an unlikely couple—Abraham and Sarah—and invited them to take a radical step of faith by trusting His promises. Through His covenant with them, God declared that He would build a family through whom all the nations of the earth would be blessed. This covenant was more than a promise to one family; it was the next chapter in God's rescue plan. Though humanity had failed to keep its relationship with God, God remained faithful. He committed Himself to bringing restoration, pointing forward to the One who would ultimately pay the debt and bless the entire world.

The Covenant reveals both God’s holiness and his love. He is so holy that he couldn't just forget about our sin and debt. Yet he is so loving that he couldn’t let us pay for it.
