Jesus Sets The Example
When it comes to discipleship, there is no greater example and teacher then Jesus Himself. Jesus modeled what discipleship looks like through his journey with his 12 disciples in the story of the gospels. Jesus did not just meet once a week with each of his disciples, He lived life with them. They lived life together on mission, following Jesus and being sanctified in the process. We believe discipliship should look as close to as Jesus lived as possible!
It was Jesus’ hope that everyone that follows him would get training from others. Unfortunately, so few have had this experience. While hearing teaching from pastors or books or youtube videos is helpful, there is something very important about studying under a rabbi like Jesus’ disciples experienced.
The Great Commission
At the end of Matthew’s gospel we hear some of the final words of Jesus while he is on the earth. While all of his instructions are important, the last thing someone says is particularly special.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
Next Steps
If you are hungry for this, take a moment and think of anyone that God has brought into your life that is further down the road from you. They don’t have to be significantly more mature, just perhaps the next season of life. There should be no doubt that they are on-fire for God, Jesus is Lord of their life and they are bearing the fruit of the Spirit. If one or more people come to mind, reach out to them and ask if they would be willing to meet with you and disciple you.
